Tomkins, a respected family-owned construction company from Queensland, entrusted me with documenting the completion of one of their first Sydney projects—the Aurrum Kids Childcare & Preschool in Jamisontown, Penrith, NSW.

Architectural highlights

Aurrum Kids Childcare & Preschool stands out with its modern architectural design, featuring a dynamic facade of red brick, rendered walls, and steel cladding in dark grey and teal. The steeply pitched rooflines and suspended sun-sails add a playful touch to the building’s exterior.

Interior design

Inside, the double-height foyer with geometric skylights creates an ever-changing pattern of light throughout the day. The centre is thoughtfully designed with colour-coded play areas for different age groups, fostering a sense of identity. Custom cabinetry mirrors the building’s rooflines, connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces seamlessly.

Outdoor play area

The playground reflects the building’s design, with pods echoing the angular rooflines and natural materials softening the sharp lines of the black-and-white courtyard. The curved path framed by Astroturf enhances the inviting, smooth-edged feel of the outdoor area.

My approach

My aim is to capture the essence of the architecture and convey the atmosphere and functionality of the space. I work closely with clients to ensure the final images tell the story of the design while highlighting its aesthetic qualities. For this project, I prioritised technical precision and creative exploration, while also working with a tight time window as the client only had access to the facility for an afternoon.
